The First Skirmish

The armies clash. The initial battles are fierce and bloody, with neither side gaining a significant advantage. The cost of war begins to weigh heavily.

The air tasted like iron and fear. My stomach churned, a knot of pure dread tightening with every thunderous boom of the war drums. From our position on the high ramparts, the battlefield spread out below like a monstrous, writhing tapestry of chaos. King Daniel’s banners, stark black against the bruised sky, snapped defiantly, a stark contrast to our own royal standard, its gold lion looking weary already.

“They’re pushing hard, Father,” Jake, my oldest brother, said, his voice tight. He gripped the hilt of his sword, his knuckles white. His eyes, usually alight with playful mischief, were dark and serious. My other brothers, Jacob, Logan, and Dylan, stood beside him, their faces grim, mirroring the anxiety that I felt pulsing through every soldier below.

Down there… it was a maelstrom. Steel met steel with a shriek that set my teeth on edge. The ground vibrated with the thud of hooves and the desperate cries of men. Dust billowed, thick and choking, obscuring the worst of the carnage, but not enough. I saw flashes of crimson, heard the sickening thud of impact, the ragged gasps of the wounded. It was a symphony of destruction, and it was playing for us.
