A Kingdom Prepares for Battle
Despite some dissent, David chooses war. The kingdom's soldiers are rallied, defenses are strengthened, and a somber mood settles over the land.
The trumpets blared, a sound that usually filled me with excitement, but today, it was a hollow echo. The air in the training yard was thick with a nervous energy, the clang of steel a desperate rhythm against the growing dread. Father, King David, stood tall on the platform, his golden armor catching the weak sunlight, but even from here, I could see the strain around his eyes. He’d spent the last few days convincing the council, and by extension, himself, that this war was necessary. For me. For Jimmy, the 'pumpkin' prince, as some of the whispers called me.
“He’s too young, Father!” Lily had argued, her voice sharp with worry, during one of the council meetings Queen Rose had allowed us to observe. She was usually so calm, but the thought of war, of Father going into battle, made her fierce.
“The lands are fertile, Lily,” Father had replied, his voice resonating with a conviction that didn't quite reach his eyes. “They will secure a future for Jimmy, a future where he won’t have to fight for every scrap as I did.”
