The air in the throne room crackled with a tension thicker than any storm cloud. King Daniel’s envoy, a man whose smile never quite reached his cold eyes, stood before my father, King David. The parchment he held, sealed with the snarling wolf crest of Daniel’s kingdom, felt like a death knell. I, Prince Jimmy, perched on my usual stool near the hearth, a little too small for my age, a little too round, a detail my father often affectionately, if a touch worriedly, called my 'pumpkin' state. My siblings, the boisterous Jake and Jacob, the quiet Logan and Dylan, and my sisters, Maya, Lily, Rayray, Daisy, and Jaylene, were scattered around, their youthful energy a stark contrast to the grim pronouncements being made.

“His Majesty King Daniel,” the envoy began, his voice smooth as polished obsidian, “offers a proposal of… shared governance over the Sunstone Plains.”

My father’s jaw tightened. The Sunstone Plains. Those rolling fields, bathed in a perpetual golden light, were the very lands he’d been dreaming of for me, for our kingdom’s future. Lands rich enough to feed us for generations, lands that would make my reign, when it eventually came, a golden age. “Shared governance?” King David’s voice was a low rumble, the sound of a lion disturbed from its slumber. “King Daniel has no claim to the Sunstone Plains. They are, and have always been, ancestral lands of our kingdom.”
