The midday sun beat down on the training yard, the clang of practice swords echoing through the castle walls. I sighed, leaning against a stone pillar, my own wooden sword feeling heavy in my hand. Daisy, usually quiet, was offering a steady stream of encouragement to Jacob, while Jaylene, ever the strategist, was barking out advice from the sidelines.

“Look at them,” Maya panted, collapsing beside me, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “Jake’s going to get a bruised ego before he gets a bruised shin.”
