Chapter 4
The Queen's Gentle Wisdom
Queen Rose, David's devoted wife, senses the danger. She offers David counsel, her wisdom a calm counterpoint to his escalating ambition and the kingdom's unrest.
The tapestry of the throne room, usually a riot of woven battles and triumphant feasts, seemed to hold its breath. Sunlight, usually a cheerful guest, slanted through the high windows like a hesitant apology, casting long, distorted shadows that danced with my father’s restless pacing. He was King David, my father, and the weight of his kingdom, of *my* future, seemed to press down on him like a mountain. He wanted more land, he’d said, land fertile and rich, a legacy for me, his son, Jimmy. But even as he spoke of legacies, a tremor ran through the court, a whisper of discontent that wasn't just from the grumbling stomachs of the treasury.
My mother, Queen Rose, sat on her throne, a vision of regal calm in silks the color of a twilight sky. Her hands, usually busy with her embroidery or a soothing pat to my shoulder, were clasped tightly in her lap. I watched her, perched on a smaller, less imposing stool near her, my own small hands gripping the smooth wood. I was Jimmy, the 'pumpkin' prince, they sometimes called me, though not to my face. My father, bless his ambitious heart, always insisted it was a term of endearment, a nod to my round cheeks and perhaps my tendency to grow a little slower than the other saplings in his royal forest. But I heard the other whispers, the ones that hinted at a softness, a lack of royal steel.
Father stopped his pacing, his gaze fixed on the map unfurled on the great oak table. It was a map of our kingdom, and beyond it, the contested lands. “Daniel covets them, Rose,” he declared, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the polished floor. “He sees our desire, and he means to claim them for himself. He will not rest until every inch of that fertile soil is under his banner.”
