The silence in the throne room was heavier than any armor, a suffocating blanket woven from grief and the ghost of my father’s booming laughter. My father. King David. The fearless king. And now… gone. I, Prince Jimmy, the ‘pumpkin’ prince, felt like a hollow gourd, scooped out and left to wither. My brothers, Jake, Jacob, Logan, and Dylan, stood beside me, their faces etched with a pain that mirrored my own, but their eyes held a flicker of something else – a fierce, protective resolve. My sisters, Maya, Lily, Rayray, Daisy, and Jaylene, were a whirlwind of hushed comfort and steely determination. And then there was my mother, Queen Rose, her regal bearing unbent, her gaze a steady beacon in the storm.

“He died for us, Jimmy,” Mom’s voice was soft, yet it cut through the gloom like a finely honed blade. “For this kingdom. For you.”

I swallowed, the words catching in my throat. “But I’m not him, Mother. I’m… I’m Jimmy. The pumpkin prince.” The nickname, once a teasing jab from my siblings, now felt like a brand, a constant reminder of my perceived inadequacy. My father, bless his ambitious, warrior heart, had always pushed me, seeing a king in the making. I’d seen a clumsy boy who tripped over his own feet and sometimes forgot which crown was which.
