Despite King David's sacrifice, King Daniel shows no sign of relenting. His ambition remains, and he continues his push for the coveted lands.
The air in the throne room still tasted like ash and sorrow. King David was gone, a ghost in the wind, and yet, here we were, the kingdom shivering under a sky that refused to weep. My father, the fearless king, had made his ultimate gamble, and now the dice had rolled, leaving us all in a desperate, uncertain game. The fertile plains, the very reason for this terrible war, lay like a tempting, blood-soaked prize between our kingdom and Daniel’s. And Daniel, oh, Daniel. He was a storm cloud that refused to break.
“He will not stop,” Elder Borin said, his voice raspy like dry leaves skittering across stone. He sat hunched on a cushioned stool, his usually bright eyes clouded with a weariness that mirrored our own. “David’s sacrifice… it hasn't satisfied him. It’s only made him bolder.”
I clenched my fists, the velvet of my tunic suddenly too tight. “Bolder? He’s a vulture picking at carrion! My father gave himself up, and Daniel still wants more?” The words felt like hot coals in my throat. I was Prince Jimmy, the ‘pumpkin’ prince, as some whispered. A prince who was supposed to be safe, protected, not standing here, trying to hold together a kingdom that felt like it was fracturing at the seams.
