I saw it all through a haze of fear and adrenaline, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs like a trapped bird. My father, King David, a titan of a man, was at the heart of it, his sword a blur of silver, his voice a rallying cry that somehow cut through the din.
But something was different. The usual fire in his eyes was mixed with a strange, unsettling resolve. It was a look I’d only seen once before, when I’d tripped and scraped my knee so badly I’d thought it would never heal, and he’d held me, his gaze dark with a pain that mirrored my own. Now, that same look was directed not at me, but at the seething mass of Daniel’s soldiers, at the very heart of the battle.
“He’s heading for Daniel!” Jake, my eldest brother, yelled, his voice strained with panic. My brothers – Jake, Jacob, Logan, and Dylan – were a wall of youthful determination beside me, their faces grim, but even they couldn’t comprehend the madness unfolding.
