The clang of steel on steel was a roar in my ears, a symphony of chaos that threatened to swallow the very sky. Dust choked the air, thick and gritty, stinging my eyes and coating my tongue with the bitter taste of fear. This wasn’t the clean, decisive victory I’d envisioned when I’d set my sights on the Whispering Plains. This was a brutal, grinding war, and the cost, I could feel it in my bones, was mounting with every fallen soldier, every desperate cry.
From my vantage point on the hill, I could see the tide of battle ebbing and flowing like a malevolent sea. Our banners, once proud and defiant, were tattered and stained. King Daniel’s forces, a relentless wave of grim determination, pushed harder with each passing hour. My heart ached for my men, for the families who waited behind our walls, praying for a swift end to this madness. But more than that, my heart ached for Jimmy. My little pumpkin. He was so young, still so full of wonder, and this war, this ugly, sprawling conflict, was being fought for his future, for the lands that would one day be his.
“Your Majesty!” Sir Kaelen’s voice, strained and urgent, cut through the din. He was my most trusted knight, his armor bearing the scars of countless battles. “We’re losing ground on the left flank! Daniel’s spearmen are breaking through!”
