Pip realizes the time machine won't return them until the ambient happiness level is restored. Sir Reginald's overwhelming grumpiness is the key obstacle to their joyous departure.

Professor Pip wrung his hands, the polished chrome of the time machine gleaming under the flickering torchlight of the great hall. It was supposed to be a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. A medieval feast, a pinnacle of historical merriment, and here they were, stuck. The Temporal Displacement Unit, usually as reliable as a grandfather clock chiming noon, remained stubbornly inert. Lily, ever the optimist, bounced on the balls of her feet, her eyes wide with a mixture of concern and that familiar spark of adventurous curiosity.

“It’s not working, Uncle Pip,” she stated, her voice a little too cheerful for the circumstances. “Are we… are we going to have to eat all this roast swan ourselves?”

Professor Pip let out a sigh that seemed to deflate his entire frame. “It’s not about the swan, my dear Lily. It’s about the chronometer. The temporal flux… it’s out of balance.” He tapped a dial that stubbornly refused to move. “The machine, you see, runs on happiness. Specifically, the *peak* happiness of a historical moment. And currently,” he gestured vaguely towards the far end of the hall, where Sir Reginald Grumbles sat like a thundercloud at a picnic, “the ambient merriment levels are… well, they’re less than merry.”
