Reflections on Happiness

Lily marvels at how they turned a grumpy knight's day around. Pip ponders the nature of happiness and the unexpected ways it can be found and created.

Lily bounced on the plush cushions of the time machine, a wide grin stretching across her face. Outside the shimmering portal, the familiar, cozy chaos of Professor Pip’s workshop was coming into focus. The scent of ozone and burnt toast, a comforting perfume to Lily, filled the air. “Wow, Uncle Pip,” she breathed, her eyes sparkling with the residual magic of their adventure. “That was… that was *amazing*! We went to a medieval feast, met a knight who was grumpier than a badger with a toothache, and then… and then we made him laugh!”

Professor Pip, his wild white hair even more dishevelled than usual, fiddled with a dial that hummed softly. He adjusted his spectacles, which had a tendency to slide down his nose during moments of intense thought. “Indeed, Lily my dear! A most unexpected, yet, dare I say, profoundly felicitous turn of events.” He patted the gleaming chrome of the time machine affectionately. “The ‘Extremely Happy Time Machine,’ as I’ve affectionately dubbed it, has certainly lived up to its name, albeit with a few… delightful detours.”

Lily giggled, recalling Sir Reginald’s transformation. One moment he was scowling, his armour clanking with every stiff movement, and the next, after Flikker the jester had performed his most outrageous, sock-puppet-based rendition of ‘The Tale of the Soggy Sausage,’ the knight had actually roared with laughter. A deep, rumbling sound that had shaken the very rafters of the great hall. “I still can’t believe we found Flikker just by following the trail of… well, of very silly things,” Lily mused. “A rubber chicken, a whoopee cushion, and a very suspicious-looking banana peel.”
