They reappear in Pip's workshop, the familiar scent of oil and invention surrounding them. The adventure has concluded, leaving them with a sense of accomplishment.
The familiar scent of oil, solder, and something vaguely like burnt toast enveloped Lily as the Time Machine’s gentle hum faded. The whirring gears stilled, and the kaleidoscope of colors that had painted their journey dissolved, replaced by the comforting, if slightly cluttered, walls of Professor Pip’s workshop. Sunlight, dappled and golden, streamed through the dusty panes of the arched window, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the air like tiny, happy fairies.
Lily blinked, her eyes adjusting from the vibrant, boisterous hues of the medieval feast to the more subdued, yet equally intriguing, palette of her uncle’s sanctuary. The adventure had been… well, it had been *extremely* happy, as promised, even with the grumpy knight and the missing jester. She took a deep, contented breath. It smelled like home. Like possibility.
Professor Pip, his white hair still slightly askew from his impromptu medieval hairstyle, was already tinkering with a loose wire on the Time Machine’s console, humming a tuneless, happy melody. His spectacles were perched precariously on the end of his nose, and a smudge of grease adorned his cheek, a badge of honor from their latest temporal escapade.
