Farewell to the Feast

The great hall, once echoing with Sir Reginald’s thunderous sighs and the jingle of Flikker’s bells, now vibrated with a different sort of music – the infectious melody of shared laughter. Pip, his usually untidy hair smoothed down by a surprisingly robust gust of medieval air, watched the scene unfold with a contented smile. Lily, her cheeks flushed with the thrill of their adventure, was currently engaged in a spirited game of charades with a group of beaming guards, her energetic gestures eliciting peals of delight. Even the stern-faced scribes, who had initially scowled at the disruption, now found themselves chuckling as Flikker, perched on a nearby table, juggled three apples with astonishing speed and a series of increasingly ridiculous faces.

Sir Reginald himself, the very picture of a man whose grumbles had been thoroughly vanquished, sat at the head of the feast table, his broad shoulders no longer hunched with despair. A genuine, if slightly bewildered, smile played on his lips as Flikker, having concluded his juggling act with a flourish that sent an apple sailing perilously close to the king’s goblet (and earning a good-natured nudge from the king himself), launched into a tale about a particularly stubborn dragon who insisted on wearing knitted socks. The knights and ladies of the court listened, captivated, their eyes sparkling with amusement. It was, Pip mused, a truly happy time, a testament to the power of a good friend and a well-timed jest.

“Professor Pip!” Lily’s voice, bright and clear, cut through the revelry. She skipped over, her eyes alight with a mischievous glint. “Sir Reginald said he’d teach me how to wield a wooden sword after this! He’s even promised to show me the ‘proper grumble’ technique.”
