The Machine's Merry Glow
As laughter echoes, the time machine begins to hum and glow brightly. The ambient happiness has reached its peak, signaling their imminent departure.
The echoes of Flikker's final, preposterous pun – something about a chicken crossing a drawbridge to avoid a moat – still bounced off the stone walls of the great hall. It was a pun so spectacularly, gloriously awful that even Sir Reginald, the king of frowns, had let out a snort that was suspiciously close to a chuckle. And then, as if a switch had been flipped, the entire hall erupted. Laughter, hearty and unrestrained, surged like a tidal wave, washing over the last vestiges of Sir Reginald’s gloom. Pip watched, his eyes twinkling behind his spectacles, as Lily clapped her hands, her face alight with pure delight. The air itself seemed to vibrate with the sheer, unadulterated joy of the moment.
And then, it happened. A low hum, like a contented bumblebee, began to emanate from the Time Machine, which sat, rather incongruously, near the roaring hearth. At first, it was so faint they almost missed it, lost beneath the cacophony of mirth. But the hum grew, deepening, gaining a resonant quality. A soft, pearly light began to bloom from the machine's polished brass dials and crystal tubes. It wasn’t the harsh glare of an invention at work, but a warm, inviting glow, like sunlight filtered through stained glass.
“Oh, my!” Pip exclaimed, his absent-mindedness momentarily forgotten as he clutched Lily’s hand. “It’s… it’s responding!”
