Chapter 11
The Knight's Lament
Flikker reveals his deep loyalty to Sir Reginald and his sadness at the knight's evident unhappiness, unaware of the knight's own sorrow.
The air in the grand hall of Castle Gloomfang, which was ironically named for its decidedly un-gloomy but decidedly grumpy inhabitant, hummed with a peculiar energy. It wasn’t the usual boisterous din of a medieval feast; the clatter of plates was muted, the laughter was strained, and the minstrel’s lute seemed to weep rather than sing. Professor Pip, his tweed jacket dusted with invisible time-travel particles, adjusted his spectacles, a frown creasing his usually cheerful brow. “Most peculiar,” he murmured, his voice barely audible above the hushed murmurs. “The historical records indicated this was a feast of unparalleled merriment. A veritable explosion of joy!”
Lily, ever the pragmatist when faced with a historical anomaly, leaned closer to her uncle. “Maybe the ‘explosion of joy’ was more of a… fizzle, Uncle Pip. Look at Sir Reginald.” She gestured with her chin towards the formidable knight seated at the high table. His armor gleamed, but his face was a thundercloud. He scowled at a platter of roasted swan as if it had personally offended him, and his grip on his goblet was so tight, Lily half-expected it to shatter.
Beside them, Flikker, the jester whose re-appearance had been the sole bright spot in their recent endeavors, wrung his hands. His motley costume, usually a riot of color, seemed dulled by the pervasive gloom. “It pains me, oh it truly pains me,” he whispered, his voice cracking with genuine distress, “to see Sir Reginald so… so… un-jolly. My jokes, my finest jests, they bounce off him like arrows off a dragon’s hide!” He sighed, a sound as mournful as the minstrel’s lute. “I thought my return would bring back the laughter, the revelry. But alas, it seems my silly antics are no match for whatever shadow has fallen upon his noble heart.”
