Flikker's Folly
They find Flikker hiding in the stables, dejected. He confesses he ran off, believing his jokes had failed Sir Reginald and he was no longer useful.
The air in the stables was thick with the scent of hay, horse, and something else… something that smelled suspiciously like damp despair. Lily wrinkled her nose, pulling her cloak tighter. They’d followed the faint, tinkling sound of a dropped bell, a sound that had led them away from the boisterous feasting hall and into the quieter, dustier corners of the castle. Professor Pip, ever the optimist, peered around with wide, curious eyes, his spectacles glinting in the dim light filtering through the stable doors.
“Remarkable!” he whispered, his voice a low buzz of excitement. “Even the stables of the Middle Ages possess a certain… rustic charm. Though I do detect a distinct lack of synthesized air freshener.”
Lily nudged him gently. “Uncle Pip, we’re looking for the jester. Remember? Sir Reginald’s jester? The one who’s supposed to be making everyone… well, happy?” She gestured vaguely towards the distant sounds of merriment, a stark contrast to their current surroundings.
