The air in the ancient ruins hung thick with the dust of centuries, a palpable weight that settled on Alex’s shoulders. Sunlight, fractured by the crumbling stone arches above, painted shifting patterns on the moss-eaten floor. The compass, nestled in Alex’s palm, vibrated with an unfamiliar urgency, its needle quivering not towards a distant point, but seemingly within the very bedrock beneath their feet. It was a sensation that echoed the hum Alex had felt in the grandparent’s attic, a faint resonance that had intensified with every step deeper into this forgotten landscape.

These weren't just ruins; they were bones of a city, bleached by time and wind. Towering pillars, once grand, now stood like skeletal fingers pointing at the indifferent sky. Walls, intricately carved with symbols Alex couldn't decipher, had crumbled into heaps of rubble, each stone whispering a forgotten tale. The compass pulsed, a silent conductor orchestrating a symphony of the past. Alex traced a finger along a weathered inscription on a fallen stele, the stone cool and rough beneath their touch. The symbols seemed to swim before their eyes, a half-formed language struggling to break free from its stony prison.

A sudden gust of wind snaked through the ruins, carrying with it a faint, mournful sigh. Alex shivered, not from the chill, but from a prickle of unease that traced its way up their spine. The compass’s hum deepened, a low thrum that seemed to resonate in Alex’s chest cavity. They looked around, their gaze sweeping over the desolation. Amidst the decay, a patch of vibrant, impossibly green moss clung to a section of wall, and beneath it, a faint glint of metal caught Alex’s eye.
