Chapter 7
Silas's Pursuit
Silas, using his own methods, is never far behind. He attempts to hinder Alex, perhaps setting traps or trying to steal the compass, showcasing his ruthlessness.
The air in the Whispering Woods had grown thick, not with mist, but with a palpable sense of being watched. Alex, clutching the compass, felt a prickle of unease crawl up their spine. The device, usually a steady, reassuring presence, now pulsed with a faint, erratic rhythm against their palm, mirroring the thrumming in Alex’s own chest. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves, seemed amplified, a chorus of unseen eyes tracking their every move. It had been days since they’d deciphered the first riddle, days of pushing through tangled undergrowth and navigating treacherous ravines, the compass their only guide. But the woods held more than just natural obstacles. A new kind of danger had begun to stalk them.
A low, guttural growl echoed from the dense thicket to their left. Alex froze, breath catching in their throat. It wasn’t the sound of any forest creature they knew. It was a sound of hunger, of malice. They spun around, the compass flashing a warning glow, its needle quivering violently, pointing not towards the path ahead, but directly at the source of the sound. A shadow detached itself from the trees, a hulking figure emerging into the dappled sunlight. Silas.
He was larger than Alex remembered, his scarred face grim, his eyes like chips of obsidian glinting with a predatory gleam. In his hand, he held a crudely fashioned spear, its tip glinting wickedly. Behind him, two more figures, burly and silent, emerged from the undergrowth, their faces impassive, their intent clear. Silas’s rivals. Alex’s rivals.
