Chapter 6
Trials of the River
The compass leads Alex to a treacherous river. Crossing it requires cleverness and courage, perhaps involving makeshift rafts or navigating dangerous rapids.
The compass, now a constant, warm weight in Alex’s pocket, thrummed with an insistent energy. Its needle, usually so precise, quivered, not towards a distant horizon, but downwards, a stark indication that the path lay not across the earth, but through it, or perhaps, beneath it. The Whispering Woods had yielded their secrets, and the air, once thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, now carried a new, metallic tang, a subtle hint of something ancient and waiting. Alex consulted the compass again, its brass casing cool against a clammy palm. The needle, unwavering, pointed towards the southwest, a direction that the crude map sketched from Grandparent’s tales depicted as a gaping maw, a tear in the otherwise solid landscape.
“The Serpent’s Coil,” Alex murmured, the name plucked from the fragmented lore. It was spoken of in hushed tones, a river that was less water and more a liquid fury, a churning, unpredictable beast that guarded the approach to whatever lay beyond. The woods thinned abruptly, replaced by a precipitous drop. Below, a scene unfolded that stole the breath from Alex’s lungs. The Serpent’s Coil was not a gentle stream. It was a raging torrent, a furious, emerald serpent writhing through a chasm of sheer rock. Water crashed against jagged outcrops, sending plumes of spray high into the air, a deafening roar that seemed to vibrate in Alex’s very bones. The compass pulsed in rhythm, a silent, steady beat against the chaos.
There was no obvious path. No bridge, no ferry, not even a hint of a crossing point. The chasm was too wide, the current too swift. Alex surveyed the scene, a knot of apprehension tightening in their stomach. This was more than just a physical obstacle; it felt like a test, a deliberate challenge laid down by the ancient forces that guided the compass. And somewhere, Alex knew, Silas would be watching, waiting for Alex to falter. The thought spurred a surge of defiance. Alex would not falter.
