Chapter 5
The Whispering Woods
Alex's journey begins in a dense, ancient forest where the compass guides them through overgrown paths. Strange sounds and shifting shadows test Alex's resolve.
The air in the Whispering Woods clung to Alex like a damp shroud, thick with the scent of decaying leaves and an almost palpable silence that felt heavier than any sound. Sunlight, what little managed to pierce the oppressive canopy, dappled the forest floor in shifting, ethereal patterns, as if the very light was hesitant to tread here. The compass, nestled in Alex’s palm, pulsed with a steady, insistent warmth, its needle quivering with a life of its own, urging them deeper into the verdant maze.
Each step was a gamble. Overgrown roots snaked across the barely-there path, threatening to trip the unwary, and moss-laden branches, heavy with dew, brushed against Alex’s face like spectral fingers. The woods lived up to their name; the wind, when it stirred, didn't rustle leaves so much as it seemed to sigh, a mournful, drawn-out sound that echoed between the ancient trees. Alex strained to listen, every nerve on edge, half-expecting to hear words whispered on the breeze, secrets meant only for the trees and the shadows.
A sudden snap of a twig to their left sent a jolt of adrenaline through Alex. They spun around, heart hammering against their ribs, but saw only a curtain of emerald leaves, undisturbed. Yet, the feeling of being watched persisted, a prickling sensation on the back of their neck. Silas. The thought, sharp and unwelcome, surfaced again. Had he followed? The woods were vast, a perfect place to lose oneself, or to be lost.
