Chapter 18
The Final Race
A climactic chase ensues as Alex secures the artifact, evading Silas who makes a final, desperate attempt to seize it, putting Alex's courage to the ultimate test.
The air in the chamber thrummed, a low, resonant hum that vibrated not just in Alex’s ears, but deep within their bones. The artifact, cradled in Alex’s hands, was no glittering jewel or hoard of gold. It was a sphere of polished obsidian, cool to the touch, etched with constellations that pulsed with a faint, internal light. Knowledge, not riches, was the treasure of Eldoria. Alex felt a profound sense of awe, a weight settling onto their shoulders that was heavier than any gold. This was the legacy, the responsibility.
A guttural roar tore through the silence. Silas. He stood framed in the chamber’s entrance, his face a mask of furious disbelief. His eyes, sharp and predatory, locked onto the obsidian sphere. “You fool!” he snarled, his voice hoarse with rage. “You think you can keep that from me? After all I’ve sacrificed?”
Alex’s heart hammered against their ribs, but a new resolve had taken root. The compass, nestled against their chest, pulsed with a steady warmth. It had guided Alex here, not for personal glory, but for protection. “It’s not yours to take, Silas,” Alex stated, their voice surprisingly steady. “It’s Eldoria’s. It’s meant to be protected.”
