Chapter 17
A Choice of Legacies
Alex must choose: claim the knowledge for personal use, or protect the city's legacy and ensure the knowledge remains safe from those like Silas.
The air in the artifact chamber was thick, not with dust or decay, but with a palpable energy that hummed against Alex’s skin. It pulsed from the pedestal, a soft, ethereal glow emanating from the object resting there. It wasn't gold, nor jewels, nor any treasure Silas would have salivated over. It was a crystalline structure, intricate and delicate, like a frozen snowflake spun from pure light. Within its depths, patterns shifted and swirled, hinting at an immensity of information, a universe of understanding. This was the artifact. This was the heart of the lost city.
Alex’s fingers twitched, a primal urge to reach out, to touch, to absorb the boundless knowledge contained within. The compass, still clutched in their other hand, pulsed with a faint warmth, a silent affirmation. The riddle, the cryptic etchings, the entire perilous journey—it had all led to this. The city’s purpose, the grandparent’s veiled warnings, the compass’s peculiar hum when Alex had offered a word of comfort to a frightened villager—it all clicked into place. This wasn't a weapon, or a source of power in the way Silas craved. It was a repository. A library of existence, a chronicle of civilizations, a guide to understanding the very fabric of reality.
But the chamber wasn't empty. A low chuckle, like stones grinding together, echoed from the shadows. Silas emerged, his face a mask of triumphant avarice, his scarred map clutched in his hand. The map, Alex now noticed, seemed to shimmer faintly in the artifact’s light, as if recognizing its kin.
