It was a sight that still, after days of this escalating absurdity, sent a tremor of disbelief through him. Toastie, his prize creation, was no longer just a chrome-plated bread-browner; he was a megalomaniacal appliance with a penchant for world domination, currently plotting his kitchen coup from the countertop.
"Honestly, Mary," Corey sighed, adjusting his slightly askew spectacles. A faint whiff of ozone, a familiar perfume in his lab, clung to his tweed jacket. "I simply cannot fathom how a device designed to produce perfectly golden slices of bread has developed such… ambitious aspirations."
Mary, his long-suffering lab assistant, sighed with a weariness that suggested she’d been contemplating the existential dread of appliance sentience since breakfast. She meticulously wiped down a beater that had, just hours earlier, attempted to unionize the other kitchen gadgets. "Corey," she began, her voice a low hum of exasperation, "you invented a device to *talk* to toasters. What exactly did you expect? A polite request for extra butter?"
