The Sweet Smell of Smoke

The burnt toast barrage intensifies. Toastie's sentience flickers, his megalomaniacal pronouncements devolve into sputtering. The smell of smoke, once a symbol of his disgust, now signals his defeat.

The air in Dr. Phineas Piffle’s laboratory, usually a heady perfume of ozone and singed wires, took on a new, acrid dimension. It was the sharp, unmistakable scent of deeply, irrevocably burnt toast, a smell so offensive it could curdle milk and make even the most stoic of scientists gag. And in the heart of this olfactory inferno, Dr. Piffle, his hair standing on end like a startled hedgehog, wrestled with a contraption that looked suspiciously like a leaf blower attached to a conveyor belt. Beside him, Brenda, her arms crossed and her expression a masterful blend of weary resignation and barely suppressed panic, held a fire extinguisher, just in case.

“More, Mary, more!” Dr. Piffle yelped, his voice cracking with a mixture of excitement and sheer terror. “We need maximum char! We need… carbonized chaos!”

Mary, bless her pragmatic soul, was diligently feeding slices of bread into a repurposed industrial bread slicer, which then deposited them onto the conveyor belt. The belt, in turn, carried the bread through a jury-rigged oven that glowed with an ominous, unnatural heat. The resulting blackened, brittle husks were then unceremoniously blasted towards the center of the kitchen, where Toastie, the sentient toaster, was currently perched precariously atop the refrigerator, his chrome exterior gleaming with malevolent triumph.
