The platform hummed with the familiar, low thrum of anticipation and impatience. Amelia stood near the edge, a modest carry-on suitcase at her feet, the weight of a thick hardback pressing into her shoulder bag. It was a novel she’d meant to finish for weeks, but her eyes had been inexplicably drawn to the small, digital glow of her phone screen instead. Another delay. The tannoy announcement, muffled and tinny, confirmed it: “Due to unforeseen signal failures, the 14:37 service to Weston-super-Mare will now depart at 15:50.” A collective groan rippled through the waiting passengers. Amelia sighed, a familiar weariness settling over her. This train line was a testament to the unpredictable, a stark contrast to the meticulously planned blueprints that filled her days.

She leaned against a cold pillar, pulling her phone out again. The last email from Ben had arrived an hour ago, a quick, witty message about a particularly stubborn plot bunny that refused to be caught. Reading his words, even in the briefest of exchanges, always brought a soft smile to her lips. It was a smile she hadn't realized she was capable of offering so freely, especially to someone she hadn't truly met. Their correspondence had grown from hesitant inquiries about returning notebooks to a rich tapestry of shared thoughts, dreams, and the quiet vulnerabilities they had discovered in each other's written confessions. He knew about her secret desire to design a botanical garden, a project she kept tucked away in the deepest corner of her mind, far from the concrete and steel of her professional world. She knew about his yearning to finish his novel, a sprawling fantasy epic that he described with a boyish enthusiasm that was utterly captivating.

A sudden gust of wind, smelling of damp concrete and distant rain, swept across the platform, ruffling her hair. She tucked a stray strand behind her ear, her gaze idly sweeping over the faces in the crowd. Most were engrossed in their own digital worlds, or staring blankly down the tracks. Then, her eyes snagged on a figure leaning against a newsstand a little further down, just past the flickering fluorescent light of the snack machine. He was tall, with a casual slouch that somehow managed to be both relaxed and attentive. A well-worn leather jacket hugged his shoulders, and his dark hair fell a little too long over his forehead, suggesting a charming disregard for meticulous grooming. He was holding a small, unadorned notebook, its cover a familiar shade of deep forest green.
