The car chosen for the test was a modified version of the previous season's chassis, a mule that had been stripped of its identity and rebuilt as a rolling laboratory. Its sidepods had been cut and reshaped to accommodate the wheel-level pressure gradients the diffusers required. Its rear wing had been re-trimmed to shift the aerodynamic balance forward, compensating for the additional downforce now generated at each corner. The suspension geometry had been revised to keep the wheel's angle relative to the ground within the narrow envelope the wind tunnel had validated. All of this work happened in the weeks after the tunnel session, in a bay where the car stood on blocks like a patient undergoing a slow, methodical surgery.

The first full assembly took place on a Monday morning, in the glare of the workshop lights. Anya watched as the front right unit was lifted into place, the hub engaging with the upright in a movement that looked deceptively simple. The suspension pushed the wheel into its static position, and the clearance between the lowermost vane and the floor of the brake duct was measured with a feeler gauge. The number matched the CAD specification to within two-tenths of a millimeter. It was a small triumph, and it was the last easy moment of the day.
