How do you prove that a vortex, born in simulation and given form in carbon and titanium, will hold its shape when the wheel is pitched, yawed, and battered by air rushing past at racing speed? That was the question Anya Sharma carried into the wind tunnel on a grey Tuesday morning, with a full-scale diffuser wheel bolted to a rig that looked like the dismembered corner of a racing car.

The facility was a cathedral of moving air. The test section, a concrete throat lined with acoustic panels the color of graphite, was dominated by a rolling road — a seamless stainless steel belt that ran beneath the wheel at road speed while a motorized hub spun the assembly from its axle. In a conventional tunnel, a stationary floor breeds a stagnant boundary layer, a cushion of still air that hides how a car really behaves ten millimeters above the tarmac. Here, the ground moved with the wheel, reproducing the true condition of rubber and carbon skimming the asphalt at two hundred kilometers per hour. For a device whose entire purpose was to accelerate air through narrow channels and out across that gap, the moving floor was not a detail. It was the experiment.

Ben Carter stood at the control desk, his forearms resting on the console as he studied a bank of monitors streaming pressure maps in orange and blue. The wheel itself had been painted with a thin film of oil and fluorescent powder before mounting. Under airflow, that coating would streak, and the streaks would reveal in merciless detail where the surface flow stayed attached, where it hesitated, and where it abandoned the surface entirely.
