The silken sheets were a stark contrast to the rough pavement of the alley, a fact I’d barely registered the night before. Now, bathed in the soft glow of dawn filtering through impossibly large windows, the opulence of Dante’s penthouse felt less like a dream and more like a gilded cage. He was still asleep beside me, his breathing a low rumble against my back, a possessive arm draped over my waist. The sight of him, so relaxed and vulnerable, was disarming, a stark contradiction to the man I’d witnessed in the shadowed alley. Yet, beneath the surface, I knew the predator was always there, merely resting.
My mind replayed the events of the previous night, a dizzying kaleidoscope of fear, exhilaration, and a bewildering sense of connection. The initial terror of being dragged from my quiet life had slowly been replaced by a strange, intoxicating fascination. Dante’s world was a dangerous labyrinth, but he was its undisputed king, and for reasons I couldn’t yet comprehend, he had chosen to pull me into its depths.
A soft knock echoed through the room, startling me. Dante stirred, his arm tightening around me before he let out a low groan. “Stay,” he murmured, his voice thick with sleep.
