The city lights blurred into streaks of neon and gold as the car sped through the night. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the hum of the engine. Each bump in the road sent a fresh jolt of adrenaline through me. I was a sparrow caught in a hawk’s talons, utterly out of my element, and the hawk’s gaze, when it flickered towards me, was as unsettling as it was captivating. Dante Volkov. The name itself seemed to carry a weight, a dark promise.

He hadn’t spoken since he’d pulled me into the sleek, black car. His silence was a tangible thing, a heavy cloak draped over the tense atmosphere. I stole glances at him, trying to decipher the enigma that was written across his chiseled features. His profile was sharp, like a figure carved from obsidian, and the faint curl of smoke from the cigar he’d somehow produced earlier still clung to the air around him, a heady, intoxicating scent that mingled with the expensive leather of the car.

When the car finally slowed, pulling to a stop before a building that seemed to pierce the very stars, my breath hitched. It wasn't just a building; it was a monument to excess. Gleaming glass and steel soared upwards, a beacon in the urban sprawl. The doorman, uniformed and impassive, opened the car door as if expecting us, his eyes never quite meeting mine. It was as if I was invisible, a ghost of a girl plucked from the shadows.
