A Test of Will
Elara is forced into a situation where she must act decisively. Her timidity is challenged, and she discovers a strength she didn't know she possessed, surprising even herself.
The air in the opulent study was thick with a tension that had nothing to do with the hushed ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. It was a palpable thing, a coiled serpent waiting to strike. Dante, his jaw tight, paced the Persian rug like a caged predator. His usual aura of effortless control was frayed, replaced by a simmering anger that made the very shadows in the room seem to deepen. Isolde stood by the mahogany desk, her posture rigid, her expression unreadable as she watched him. I, Elara Meadowlight, was relegated to a plush armchair near the fireplace, a silent observer in a drama I was rapidly becoming a part of.
"He's made his move, Isolde," Dante finally growled, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in my chest. "Silas is bolder than I anticipated. To strike so openly, so *publicly*…" He trailed off, running a hand through his dark hair, a gesture that had once seemed so casual and now spoke volumes of his agitation.
Isolde inclined her head slightly. "The shipment was intercepted at the docks. Not a clean job, Dante. Sloppy, but effective. They made sure to leave a message."
