The hum of the city was a distant murmur, a lullaby I usually found comforting. Tonight, however, it felt like a prelude to something far less serene. The penthouse, a gilded cage I’d reluctantly come to inhabit, was silent. Dante had been gone for hours, leaving behind only the ghost of his scent, a potent mix of expensive cologne and something primal, something that still made my skin prickle with a disquieting awareness. I’d tried to lose myself in a book, but the words swam before my eyes, each sentence a pale imitation of the raw, visceral reality that had swallowed me whole.

My gaze drifted to the floor-to-ceiling windows, the sprawling cityscape a dazzling tapestry of lights below. It was beautiful, undeniably so, but it was a beauty that felt fragile, perched precariously on a precipice. I remembered the first night here, the overwhelming opulence, the dizzying height, the feeling of being utterly out of my depth. Now, that feeling was amplified, laced with a new, sharp edge of fear.

Isolde had been… cryptic. Her pronouncements, delivered with a practiced neutrality, had been like tiny cracks appearing in the polished veneer of this life. “He has enemies, Elara. Many enemies. Some are more patient than others.” The words echoed in my mind, a chilling refrain. I’d seen the way she looked at me, a flicker of something unreadable in her dark eyes – pity? Warning? Or perhaps just an assessment of the latest plaything in Dante’s dangerous game.
