The silence of the penthouse was a stark contrast to the chaos I’d witnessed just hours before. It pressed in on me, thick and heavy, like the velvet curtains that draped the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, the city lights blurred into streaks of gold and ruby, a distant, indifferent spectacle. Inside, I was adrift in a sea of polished chrome and hushed luxury, a small, terrified boat tossed by a storm I didn’t understand. Dante Volkov. The name itself was a low thrum in the air, a promise of danger and something else, something that made my skin prickle with an unfamiliar anticipation.

He sat across from me, a dark silhouette against the cityscape, the faint glow of his cigar painting his features in shifting shadows. The air around him was charged, a magnetic pull that drew me in even as every instinct screamed for me to flee. He hadn't said much since we'd arrived, his gaze a constant, unnerving presence. I’d expected demands, threats, a recounting of my trespass. Instead, there was this quiet intensity, a watchful waiting that felt more potent than any outburst.

My hands were clasped tight in my lap, my knuckles white. I tried to breathe, to steady the frantic rhythm of my heart, but it was like trying to catch smoke. The memory of his touch, the unexpected heat of his kiss against my lips, replayed in my mind, a dizzying, disorienting echo. It was wrong, so wrong, but a part of me, a foolish, trembling part, hadn't wanted it to end.
