The air in Dante’s penthouse was thick with the scent of expensive cigar smoke and something else, something primal and intoxicating that clung to him like a second skin. I’d spent the last few days in a daze, a whirlwind of silk sheets, hushed conversations, and the constant hum of a life I never knew existed. It was a gilded cage, beautiful and terrifying, and I was its newest occupant.

My fingers traced the intricate carvings on the mahogany desk, a stark contrast to the smooth, cool marble of the walls. Everything here was a testament to power, to a dominion carved out of shadows and fear. And Dante, the man who commanded it all, was a walking paradox. One moment, he was the ruthless king I’d glimpsed in that alley, his eyes like chips of obsidian, his voice a low rumble that promised both pleasure and pain. The next, he was… something else. Something I was only beginning to understand.

He’d been in his study, a room that felt like the heart of his empire, when I’d finally gathered the courage to venture out of the opulent suite he’d assigned me. The door was ajar, and a sliver of light beckoned me closer. I told myself it was just curiosity, a desperate need to understand the man who had so effortlessly stolen me from my life. But as I’d approached, a strange sensation had washed over me. It was like seeing the world through a different lens, a subtle shimmer around the edges of everything.
