Johnny, as Jack has begun to call him, is obsessively tidy, his routine involving a meticulous daily check of every door and window. One door, however, remains perpetually locked: the basement. Jack’s curiosity gnaws at him; the heavy, reinforced door and the absolute absence of any explanation for its secrecy suggest something far more sinister than mere storage lies beneath their feet. He begins to suspect that the heart of their godparents' unsettling behavior beats within the dark confines of that forbidden space.
Johnny’s routine was a silent, relentless tide that washed over the house each morning. Jack, now calling his godfather Johnny in the quiet rebellion of his mind, watched it unfold with a growing unease that settled deep in his gut. It wasn’t just the early hour, the predawn chill that seemed to cling to the air even inside, but the *precision* of it all. Johnny moved through the rooms like a ghost, his steps unnervingly silent on the polished wood floors, his gaze sweeping over every surface with an almost predatory intensity.
He’d check the latch on the front door, then the back. A quick, almost imperceptible tug on each window handle, a soft click of the lock, a gentle push to ensure it was secured. It was a performance of safety, Jack thought, a meticulous display of a homeowner’s vigilance. But there was a tension in Johnny’s shoulders, a tightness around his jaw that betrayed the calm facade. It was the tension of a man guarding something, not merely protecting it.
