Chapter 4
Unsettling Silences
Dinner becomes an exercise in strained politeness. Elena and Marcus engage in stilted conversations, their words carefully chosen, their laughter forced. Jack and Maya observe their godparents’ intense, almost predatory stares, and catch glimpses of hushed, urgent arguments behind closed doors. These moments of discord amplify the children's growing apprehension. The silences between their godparents are more telling than their words, filled with an unspoken tension that makes the siblings feel like unwelcome intruders in their own lives.
The clinking of silverware against porcelain was the loudest sound in the dining room, a brittle symphony that echoed the hollowness in Jack’s chest. Across the polished mahogany table, Elena and Marcus offered smiles that felt painted on, their eyes darting between the two of them with an intensity that made Jack’s skin prickle. Maya, beside him, picked at her food, her fork tracing invisible patterns on her plate, a silent testament to the gnawing anxiety that had become their constant companion.
“So, Jack,” Elena began, her voice a little too bright, a little too sweet. “How are you finding your new room? Is it to your liking?”
Jack swallowed, the bite of roast chicken tasting like ash. “It’s… fine, Aunt Elena.” He stumbled over the title, the unfamiliarity a fresh pang of loss. He missed calling her Mom. He missed calling him Dad. “It’s just… different.”
