The air in the study had turned frigid, a stark contrast to the humid dread that had been a constant companion since their arrival. Elena’s words, sharp and devoid of any warmth, had sliced through the last vestiges of denial. “Sacrifices,” she’d called them. Jack’s breath hitched, the word a physical blow. Beside him, Maya’s small hand, usually so steady, trembled in his. Their godparents, the people they were supposed to trust, the supposed saviors in their time of grief, were monsters. Fanatics. The pronouncements, chillingly calm, had confirmed the terrifying whispers of the past few weeks, the unease that had settled like dust in every corner of this sprawling, suffocating house.

“You cannot reason with us, children,” Marcus had added, his voice a low rumble that seemed to emanate from the very foundations of the earth. “This is the will of the Ancient Ones. Your parents understood, in the end.”

Jack’s jaw tightened. Understood? His parents, vibrant and full of life, murdered for some twisted, ancient deity? The thought was an inferno in his chest. He looked at Maya, her eyes wide with a terror that mirrored his own, but beneath it, he saw a flicker, a familiar spark of defiance that had always burned within her. It was the same spark that kept him going, the same spark that had fueled their survival through the horrors of Acapulco.
