The air in Willow Creek had grown heavy, not with the usual scent of pine and damp earth after a morning shower, but with a palpable unease that clung to the eaves of cottages and rustled through the leaves of the ancient oak by the village square. Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of a life lived in quiet contemplation, had spoken of shadows that stretched too far, of whispers carried on winds that weren't entirely natural. Saira, her heart a small bird fluttering against her ribs, felt the truth of Maeve’s words deep within her bones.

It was during the hushed twilight, as the first stars pricked the bruised velvet of the sky, that the true nature of the encroaching danger began to reveal itself. A panicked cry echoed from the edge of the forest, followed by the frantic bleating of sheep. Roric, his hunting bow already slung across his broad shoulders, was the first to react, his movements swift and decisive. Saira, her hands instinctively reaching for the worn leather pouch at her hip, felt a familiar, almost urgent pull towards the direction of the commotion.

As she hurried through the village, the faces of her neighbors were etched with a fear she hadn't seen before. Children were being ushered indoors, their wide eyes reflecting the growing anxiety. And then, amidst the rising tide of panic, she saw him.
