Dust motes danced in the single shaft of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating ancient tapestries depicting celestial maps and forgotten beasts. Saira stood before the Oracle, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest, while Aqua’s steady presence was a grounding warmth beside her. Elder Maeve, her face etched with a profound reverence, stood a respectful distance away, her gaze fixed on the veiled figure seated on a raised dais.
The Oracle, a woman whose age was impossible to decipher, her skin like parchment and her eyes like chips of obsidian, finally stirred. Her voice, when it came, was not a whisper, but a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through the very stones of the chamber. “You seek clarity, child of Willow Creek. You seek to understand the thread that binds your souls.”
Saira swallowed, her throat dry. “Yes, Oracle. We… we feel a connection, but I don’t know its depth, its purpose.” She glanced at Aqua, who offered a small, reassuring smile that did little to quell the tremor in her hands.
