The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient stone, as Saira and Aqua stepped deeper into the shadowed embrace of the Whispering Woods. Moonlight, a pale, ethereal luminescence, dappled the path ahead, painting shifting patterns on gnarled roots and moss-laden branches. The sounds of the familiar forest had receded, replaced by a profound silence that pressed in on Saira, a silence that felt less like an absence of noise and more like a held breath.
“We are close,” Aqua’s voice, a soft murmur against the stillness, reached Saira. There was no urgency in their tone, only a quiet certainty that had become a comforting anchor for Saira’s own fluttering unease. She nodded, her gaze sweeping the impenetrable darkness that pressed in from all sides. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, a hushed warning about the guardians of the ancient power, and a strange tremor, not entirely of fear, ran through her.
They rounded a bend, and the path opened into a small clearing. In the center stood a cluster of monolithic stones, their surfaces etched with symbols that seemed to pulse with a faint, inner light. The moonlight caught them, making them gleam as if carved from solidified starlight. And then, Saira saw them.
