The air in the sanctuary, once thick with the scent of moonpetal blossoms and the gentle hum of protective wards, now felt thin, brittle. A cold dread, far more chilling than the perpetual twilight of our hidden haven, had settled over me. They had found us. The whispers that had haunted my sleep, the uneasy stillness of the forest creatures, the sudden, jarring silence of the usually boisterous pixie streams – it all coalesced into a single, terrifying truth. The shadowy faction, the unseen hands that had been clawing at the edges of our peace, had finally breached our defenses.

Starlet, bless her innocent heart, was oblivious. She was chasing iridescent glow-moths through the mossy glade, her laughter like wind chimes caught in a summer breeze. Her small hands, still plump and soft, reached out, her tiny fingers leaving trails of shimmering dust in the air, coaxing the light-winged creatures closer. It was a sight that tore at me, a beautiful, fragile moment I desperately wanted to preserve, to shield from the encroaching darkness. But the dark was relentless.

A tremor, deep and guttural, vibrated through the earth. It wasn't the gentle pulse of the Atlas awakening, but a violent shudder, as if the very ground were being torn asunder. The glow-moths scattered, their light extinguished, and Starlet, startled, stumbled back, her wide, innocent eyes searching mine.
