The Convergence of Threats

The air itself seemed to hum with a discordant energy, a frantic vibration that tickled the back of my throat and coiled in my stomach. It wasn't the usual thrum of the Atlas, the vibrant symphony of life and magic that I’d grown accustomed to, but a ragged, tearing sound, like a celestial fabric ripped asunder. Outside the sanctuary’s shimmering, protective veil, the sky was a bruised, sickly purple, shot through with streaks of molten gold that pulsed with an unhealthy luminescence. Storms, unlike any I'd witnessed even in the Atlas's tempestuous war zones, raged with an unnatural fury. Lightning, not the sharp, clean crack of thunder, but a drawn-out, agonizing scream, split the heavens, and the ground beneath my feet shuddered with a violence that felt deeply wrong.

Starlet, usually so full of playful energy, was unusually still. She sat cross-legged on the worn rug in our small dwelling, her brow furrowed, her eyes wide and fixed on some unseen point beyond the walls. Her small hands were pressed to her temples, and a faint, ethereal glow emanated from her fingertips. I knew that look. It was the sign that her unique vision was working overtime, trying to decipher the chaos that threatened to consume us.

"Starlet, honey?" I knelt beside her, my voice barely a whisper. "What do you see?"
