The bell above the door of "Curios & Keepsakes" chimed a cheerful, if slightly dusty, melody as Lily and Tom stepped inside. The air was thick with the scent of aged paper, beeswax polish, and something faintly floral, like dried lavender tucked away in forgotten drawers. Sunlight, fractured by the prisms hanging in the window, cast dancing rainbows across towering stacks of furniture, overflowing display cabinets, and the general, delightful clutter of a place that held a thousand stories.

Mr. Silas, the proprietor, was perched on a stool behind a counter laden with an assortment of antique spectacles, pocket watches, and intricately carved wooden figures. He wore a tweed waistcoat over a crisp, pale blue shirt, and his silver hair was swept back from a kindly, lined face. His eyes, behind round, wire-rimmed glasses, twinkled with an almost perpetual amusement, as if he’d just heard a particularly good joke that no one else was privy to.

"Ah, Lily, Tom," he greeted, his voice like the rustle of old parchment. "Back so soon? I trust the box hasn't sprouted wings and flown away?"
