The First Clue
A faint inscription on the box's underside, barely visible, leads them to the town's old library. They wonder what ancient knowledge it might hold.
Lily traced the swirling gold patterns on the lid of the box, her fingertip catching on a tiny imperfection. It was there, near the hinge, almost invisible unless the light hit it just right. A faint scratch, not part of the elaborate design, but something etched into the wood itself. She squinted, leaning closer, her breath fogging the polished surface for a fleeting moment. “Tom,” she whispered, her voice barely above the hum of the refrigerator. “Look.”
Tom, who had been meticulously examining the box’s impossible seams from every conceivable angle, shuffled over. He was already smudged with a faint dusting of what might have been antique varnish, or perhaps just the residue of his own intense focus. He peered where Lily indicated, his brow furrowing. “What is it? Another secret button?”
“No, not a button. It’s… it’s writing.” Lily’s heart gave a little flutter of excitement. This was it. The first real clue. She ran her finger over the minuscule inscription again. It was too small to make out clearly, a series of tiny dots and dashes, almost like a secret code. “It’s too tiny to read. And it’s… weird. Like Morse code, but not quite.”
