The air in Grandma Elsie’s sun-drenched attic hummed with a peculiar sort of quiet, the kind that settles after a great revelation. Lily traced the intricate carvings on the empty box, her fingers following the swirling patterns that now felt less like decoration and more like a conversation. Beside her, Tom sat cross-legged, his usual boisterous energy subdued, his gaze fixed on the faded photograph Lily had found tucked inside her Grandma’s old recipe book. It showed a younger Elsie, her eyes sparkling with mischief, standing beside a man with a wild halo of white hair and a smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes.
“So, Mr. Abernathy,” Tom began, his voice a soft murmur, “was Grandma’s friend. And he made this box.”
