It was a tension that coiled in the bellies of merchants, tightened the lips of gossiping ladies, and, most importantly, thrummed through the very scales of the Pearl White Dragon. Xiao Ying was here. The name itself was a pronouncement of doom, a chilling harbinger of the hunter’s relentless pursuit.

He felt her presence like a prickle of ice against his scales, a phantom chill that had nothing to do with the season. She was a storm gathering on the horizon, and his heart, so recently filled with a fragile, burgeoning hope, now felt the first icy drops of dread. His mind, usually a vast, clear lake reflecting the azure sky, was clouded with the image of her, the renowned slayer, her reputation preceding her like a tempest. He knew the stories, the whispers that painted her as an avenging angel, a terror to all of dragonkind. And he, the Pearl White Dragon, the one who dared to dream of a life beyond the ancient enmity, was now her quarry.

The Elder of the Urban South Clan had warned him, his voice a low rumble of concern. "She carries the weight of a thousand slain, young one. Her heart is hardened by loss, and she sees no difference between the beasts of the wild and the dragons who walk among men. You must be wary."
