Chapter 15
A New Era Dawns
Xiao Ying, witnessing the dragon's ultimate sacrifice and the Empress's fierce love, is stunned into silence. The court watches, breathless, as convention begins to crumble.
The air in the imperial courtyard hung thick with an unspoken tension, a palpable stillness that had descended like a shroud after the dragon’s final, defiant roar. Xiao Ying, the legendary slayer, stood frozen, her renowned blade dripping not with dragon’s blood, but with the very essence of her shattered convictions. Her eyes, usually sharp and piercing, were wide, reflecting the unbelievable spectacle before her. The Pearl White Dragon, his magnificent form shimmering with an otherworldly light, had not yielded to her final, devastating blow. Instead, he had shielded the Empress, absorbing the full force of her attack, his own scales fracturing, his pearlescent hide marred by the very weapon meant to end him.
Around them, the assembled courtiers, a sea of silk and stoic faces, were equally stunned into silence. Years of ingrained prejudice, of ingrained fear, of ingrained tradition, seemed to evaporate in the incandescent glow emanating from the wounded dragon. They had come expecting a brutal, triumphant end to the beast, a validation of their established order. Instead, they witnessed a profound act of love, a sacrifice so pure and unyielding that it rendered their ingrained beliefs hollow.
The Empress, her regal composure momentarily fractured, knelt beside the dragon. Tears, bright and unbidden, traced paths through the dust and grime on her cheeks. Her hands, usually adorned with rings of authority, were now gentle, caressing the dragon’s massive head, her touch a stark contrast to the brutal violence that had just unfolded. "My love," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion, a sound so foreign to the ears of the court that it momentarily silenced the whispers that had begun to stir. "My beautiful, brave love."
