Chapter 8
A Love That Reigns
With Jian's unwavering support, Mei navigates the treacherous currents of her new role. Their love, once a secret, now stands as a beacon of hope and a quiet defiance of the dynasty's rigid traditions.
The silk of Mei’s robes, once a humble grey, now flowed in imperial gold, embroidered with phoenixes that seemed to stir with a life of their own. The weight of the Empress’s crown, a delicate filigree of jade and pearls, rested upon her brow, a far heavier burden than any she had carried in the scullery. Yet, the gnawing fear that had been her constant companion for weeks had begun to recede, replaced by a fragile, dawning peace. Jian’s hand, steady and warm, rested on the small of her back, a silent anchor in the swirling sea of faces that filled the Grand Audience Hall. Their eyes, a thousand sharp points of curiosity and judgment, followed her every movement.
She could feel them, the whispers like a swarm of unseen insects, buzzing with disbelief, with scorn, with a potent, simmering resentment. *A maid. An Empress.* The words echoed in the cavernous space, amplified by the marble and the hushed reverence that was supposed to accompany such an occasion. Mei kept her gaze lowered, focusing on the intricate patterns of the imperial rug, on the steady rhythm of Jian’s breathing beside her. His presence was a shield, his unwavering conviction a silent testament against the tide of their disapproval.
Prime Minister Liu stood at the Emperor’s right hand, his face a mask of polite deference, but his eyes, when they flickered towards her, held a cold, calculating glint that sent a shiver down her spine. Beside him, Consort Lin, her aunt by marriage and a formidable presence in the imperial household, radiated an aura of glacial disapproval. Her thin lips were pressed into a tight line, her chin held at an imperious angle, as if the very sight of Mei in such a position was an affront to the very foundations of the Sang Dynasty.
