His gaze, usually a placid lake reflecting the sky, now held the unyielding glint of a honed blade. He had spoken the words, a declaration that had rippled through the assembled court like a thrown stone, shattering the delicate surface of their carefully constructed world.

"Mei," he had said, his voice resonating with an authority that brooked no argument, yet softened by a tenderness that was entirely his own, "is my true love."

The silence that followed was more deafening than any roar. It was a silence thick with shock, with outrage, with the unspoken accusations that clawed at the edges of propriety. Prime Minister Liu, his face a mask of practiced impassivity, betrayed a flicker of something akin to disbelief in the minute tightening around his eyes.
