Agnes speaks in riddles, her words like scattered seeds. She guides Elara not with answers, but with questions, nudging her towards introspection and the courage to face what lies within.
The air in Agnes’s small cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something like old paper and forgotten stories. Sunlight, filtered through lace curtains, dappled the worn wooden table between us. Agnes, her hands gnarled as ancient roots, poured tea from a chipped ceramic pot, her movements slow and deliberate, each action a quiet ritual. Her eyes, the color of faded denim, held a depth that both soothed and unsettled me.
“The words,” she began, her voice a low murmur, like pebbles rolling in a stream, “they are not meant to be simply read, child. They are to be felt. Like the wind through the reeds, or the first blush of dawn on a sleeping field.”
I clutched the book, its worn leather cool against my fingertips. The verses within, once a source of inexplicable comfort, now felt like the echoes of a distant storm, stirring a disquiet I couldn’t quite name. “But Agnes,” I ventured, my voice barely a whisper, “they speak of things I… I don’t understand. Or perhaps, I don’t want to.”
