The Unraveling
The chill of the attic air clung to Elara’s skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of the sunlit afternoon she’d left behind. Dust motes danced in the narrow shafts of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating forgotten relics of lives long past. Her fingers, still tingling from the cold metal of the locket, traced the intricate scrollwork on its surface. It was heavier than it looked, a small, tarnished promise of answers. She’d tried every hairpin, every bobby pin, every flimsy piece of metal she could find in her room, but the locket remained stubbornly shut, a silent sentinel guarding its secrets.
A shadow fell across the dusty floorboards, and Elara startled, her heart leaping into her throat. She hadn’t heard anyone approach. Turning, she found Leo standing in the doorway, his dark eyes regarding her with an unnerving stillness. He seemed to materialize from the shadows, a familiar yet perpetually elusive presence.
“Still at it?” His voice was low, a gentle rumble that barely disturbed the quiet. He held a small, worn book, its pages dog-eared and heavily annotated.
